Soundtrack Reviews

February 15, 2013 | By

Just getting over a wretched cold that managed to make this week one big blur. Amazingly, I managed a fully coherent podcast with Rob Simonsen, an up & coming composer who’s enjoyed an internship with Oscar-nominated composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi). The discussion of working with the esteemed Canadian composer, and Simonsen’s own work in film, will be up next week.

In the meantime, there’s  a trio of new soundtrack reviews: Sony’s 50th anniversary CD of Bye Bye Birdie [M] (1963), which features another set of bonus tracks, and two CDs from BSX Records: new theme performances in Film Noir’s Finest [M], and Alan Howarth’s strikingly faithful re-recordings of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 and Dark Star [M] – the latter previously available in a music / dialogue / sound effects suite.

Coming this weekend are Twilight Time reviews, and if the fog in the brain has sufficiently dissipated, some test footage of trippy feedback effects using video gear older than your children.
