Soundtrack Reviews: Men of Action!

April 15, 2013 | By

This one’s a quick update, due to preparations for this year’s Hot Doc’s Film Festival, of which I shall see many films.

This week’s quartet of soundtrack titles hover around the he-man action figure typical of some classic and burgeoning film franchises: Marco Beltrami returns with full orchestral gusto in A Good Day to Die Hard [M] (Sony Classical), Joe Kraemer gets an important big screen assignment with Jack Reacher [M] (La-La Land Records), John Scott’s Man on Fire [M] is back in circulation (via Varese Encore) , and Michael Kamen’s Road House [M] is finally out in disc (via Intrada).

The connection, besides boasting big-name actors, is Michael Kamen, who helped define the sound of eighties & nineties action films (especially those produced by Joel Silver) via Die Hard, a film whose score consists of original and 2 temp track cues derived from James Horner’s Aliens and Scott’s Man on Fire, and like Die Hard, Jack Reacher is an attempt to start a new franchise since star Tom Cruise may be winding down his Mission: Impossible entries.

Or maybe the dots I see are non-existent.

Coming next: more smut from Impulse / Synapse’s Roman Porno Collection.
