Those Daring and Magnificent Men and Women

Cartoonist Ronald Searle is a genius. Period.

Yup, it’s been a week since the last update, largely because I finished off a few test reels of various analogue-digital video experiments that are now on Vimeo & YouTube, plus a pair of lengthy blogs on exactly what the weirdness is all about. Coming shortly will be a Twitter feed + Facebook page, but until then, feel free to check out a blog on TV zoom lenses for vintage cameras + a ‘self portrait’, and a follow-up blog on two video feedback variants using a mixer minted the year I was born. (Sony clearly built the thing to last a few decades.)

Just uploaded is a pair of reviews  – Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines [M] (1965) from Twilight Time on Blu, and Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies / aka Monte Carlo or Bust [M] (1969) from Legend Films. Both were directed / co-written by Ken Annakin, co-written by Jack Davies, scored by Ron Goodwin, and co-starred Terry-Thomas, Gert Frobe, and Eric Sykes, but only one is a real gem. Sometimes waiting a few years too many and cobbling together a hasty script doesn’t yield anything more than an unnecessary sequel.

Coming next: a review of DirectTV’s first original TV series, Rogue, which ought to be coming to home video this fall. The network’s already given the green light for Season 2, so expect more naked Canadians, New Zealanders, and Brits, and a smattering of splattered brain matter.
