{"id":10050,"date":"2014-11-14T12:36:56","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T17:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10050"},"modified":"2014-11-14T12:52:41","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T17:52:41","slug":"twilight-goes-to-war-part-3-salvador-plus-the-honorary-consul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10050","title":{"rendered":"Twilight Time Goes to War, Part 3: Salvador, plus The Honorary Consul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Salvador_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-10065\" alt=\"Salvador_poster\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Salvador_poster.jpg\" width=\"209\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Salvador_poster.jpg 580w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Salvador_poster-191x300.jpg 191w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a>Twilight Time\u2019s Blu-ray release of Oliver Stone\u2019s Oscar-Nominated docu \/ agit-prop drama <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10049\">Salvador<\/a><\/strong> (1986) also marks the first time I finally watched this classic film in the director\u2019s C.V.<\/p>\n<p>As with many people, there\u2019s always a film you should\u2019ve seen when it was surrounded by critical praise but oddly never got around to watching, and it was well worth the wait (or rather, what the heck was I waiting for?).<\/p>\n<p>James Woods is amazing, the dialogue is profane, dramatic, and wryly funny, and there are gripping moments where Woods\u2019 incarnation of real-life photo journalist Richard Boyle stops the film purely to vent outrage against the U.S. Government\u2019s policy of supporting an anti-Communist right-wing regime in a brutal civil war.<\/p>\n<p>Co-starring is Mexican actress Elpedia Carrillo, whom genre fans may better remember as the lone woman in <strong>Predator<\/strong> (1987).<\/p>\n<p>Carrillo had a hot streak during the early \/ mid-eighties, appearing in several prominent films with big stars, and in addition to a tiny role in <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9989\"><strong>Under Fire<\/strong><\/a> (1983), she was the love interest in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10048\">The Honorary Consul<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10048\"> \/ aka <strong>Beyond the Limit<\/strong><\/a> (1983), an adaptation of Graham Greene\u2019s novel about a botched kidnapping in Northern Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by John Mackenzie (<strong>The Fourth Protocol<\/strong>) and edited by expert action cutter Stuart Baird, <strong>Consul <\/strong>was released on a widescreen DVD in Britain, but remains unavailable in North America, so I\u2019ve reviewed the film from, er, its original Betamax release.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10068\" style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a style=\"text-align: center;\" href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BeyondTheLimit_tape_m.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10068\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10068 \" alt=\"BeyondTheLimit_tape_m\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BeyondTheLimit_tape_m.jpg\" width=\"487\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BeyondTheLimit_tape_m.jpg 811w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BeyondTheLimit_tape_m-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BeyondTheLimit_tape_m-768x473.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This tape is 30 years old, and still plays. Amazing.
