{"id":10634,"date":"2015-02-05T15:30:27","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T20:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10634"},"modified":"2015-02-05T16:58:30","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T21:58:30","slug":"john-murphy-podcast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=10634","title":{"rendered":"John Murphy&#8217;s Anonymous Rejected Filmscore"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10637\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/anonymous-rejected-filmscore_Art.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10637\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10637\" alt=\"anonymous rejected filmscore_Art\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/anonymous-rejected-filmscore_Art.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/anonymous-rejected-filmscore_Art.jpg 350w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/anonymous-rejected-filmscore_Art-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Murphy&#8217;s Anonymous Rejected Filmscore.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Just posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/ca\/podcast\/kqek.com-digital-big-head\/id955326826\" target=\"_blank\">iTunes<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bigheadamusements.libsyn.com\/kqekcom-interview-with-film-composer-john-murphy-2015\" target=\"_blank\">Libsyn<\/a>,\u00a0and KQEK.com\u2019s <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/lu-hiVWu12Q\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube channel<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> is a podcast with composer John Murphy, who discusses his latest album\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Anonymous Rejected Filmscore<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, available digitally, on CD, and in a new 2-LP edition from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tapednoise.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.tapednoise.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s both an unusual yet obvious title \u2013 the album features thematic material which Murphy further developed after a score for an unnamed film was rejected by the powers that be.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">It\u2019s happened to <em>many<\/em> composers: the iconic Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Howard Shore come to mind, and even Alex North had his music for <\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">2001: A Space Odyssey<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> (1968) scrapped by director Stanley Kubrick due a series of power issues between what studio MGM wanted as insurance \u2013 a palatable, more traditional score for what they feared might be an unsellable avant garde film \u2013 and the director\u2019s intentions to match his montages with music he felt was correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>North reportedly reworked some of the rejected elements in his scores for the TV docu series <strong>Africa<\/strong> (1967) and the visually gorgeous\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/d\/3687_Dragonslayer1981.htm\" target=\"window\">Dragonslayer<\/a><\/strong> (1981), whereas the bulk of John Ottman\u2019s unused cues from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/h\/3401_HalloweenH20.htm\" target=\"window\">Halloween H20<\/a> <\/strong>(1998) were released in a branded \u2018Music inspired by\u2019 album to wiggle through the rights and legal agreements. (Most of the film features re-recorded cues from Marco Beltrami\u2019s <strong>Scream<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Bernard Herrmann\u2019s <strong>Torn Curtain<\/strong> (1966) was junked early into the recording stage by director Alfred Hitchcock, and thus far only a handful of the original cues have appeared on CD, whereas both Bernstein and label Varese Sarabande separately re-recorded the music so it can exist in some form.<\/p>\n<p>Even award-winning, best-selling composer Henry Mancini joined the exclusive club when his <strong>Frenzy<\/strong> (1972) score, also for a Hitchcock film, was replaced; with the exception of a rerecorded cue, nothing else has been released so far, probably because Universal still owns the music. They commissioned it, paid for it, and it\u2019s up to them if they want to release it, or let it breed more dust.
