{"id":11203,"date":"2015-04-09T01:27:49","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T05:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=11203"},"modified":"2015-04-09T01:32:17","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T05:32:17","slug":"tales-of-rape-bandit-queen-indias-daughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=11203","title":{"rendered":"Tales of Rape: Bandit Queen (1995) + India&#8217;s Daughter (2014)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s really no headline that can subdue the impact of the central subject in the two films reviewed this week: Shekhar Kapur\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=11202\">Bandit Queen<\/a><\/strong> (1995), new on Blu from Twilight Time; and Leslee Udwin\u2019s documentary <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=11207\">India\u2019s Daughter<\/a> <\/strong>(2014), which has yet to receive a commercial DVD release but has appeared on TV and is archived on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ufawmkd1MuM\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a> and is distributed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmm.com\/filmcatalog\/pages\/c898.shtml\" target=\"window\">Women Make Movies<\/a> in America.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BanditQueen_BR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11211\" alt=\"BanditQueen_BR\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BanditQueen_BR.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a>Based on the biographical work by Mala Sen, <strong>Bandit Queen<\/strong> chronicles the life of Phoolan Devi, a gang leader initially convicted and jailed for murdering several village men in retribution for a gang rape, but released a decade later, after which the folk heroine was assassinated in 2001 at the age of 37.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IndiasDaughter_title.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11213\" alt=\"IndiasDaughter_title\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IndiasDaughter_title.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>India\u2019s Daughter<\/strong> is the controversial hour-long BBC documentary on the gang rape and murder of an Indian medical student. Udwin\u2019s film was banned in India soon after transcripts and video extracts from one of the convicted rapists appeared in news reports.
