{"id":12169,"date":"2015-09-02T18:27:47","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T22:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=12169"},"modified":"2015-09-02T18:27:47","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T22:27:47","slug":"we-come-as-profiteers-hubert-saupers-grim-african-diptych","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=12169","title":{"rendered":"We Come As Profiteers: Hubert Sauper&#8217;s Grim African Diptych"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/WeComeAsFriends_poster_s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12165\" alt=\"WeComeAsFriends_poster_s\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/WeComeAsFriends_poster_s.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a>I reviewed Hubert Sauper\u2019s utterly grim doc <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=12167\">Darwin\u2019s Nightmare<\/a> <\/strong>(2004) back in 2007 when good old Maple Films still existed, and ported the review from the archive as a related piece to his new film, the similarly grim <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=12164\">We Come As Friends<\/a><\/strong> (2014), filmed as Sudan was being split into Arabic north and Christian south nations.<\/p>\n<p>The visuals in both films are outstanding, but <strong>Friends<\/strong> is a more concise drama with interviews rather than a full fly-on-the-wall document. Sauper\u2019s film recently screened at the <a href=\"http:\/\/boxoffice.hotdocs.ca\/WebSales\/pages\/info.aspx?evtinfo=42790~fff311b7-cdad-4e14-9ae4-a9905e1b9cb0&amp;\">Bloor Hot Docs Cinema<\/a>, and I figure it\u2019ll likely come back for another round before its inevitable DVD release (likely sometime in the fall \/ winter season), given its powerful theme of colonial exploitation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Cheers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
