{"id":1283,"date":"2010-11-12T12:08:29","date_gmt":"2010-11-12T17:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/?p=1250"},"modified":"2010-11-12T12:08:29","modified_gmt":"2010-11-12T17:08:29","slug":"fritz-lang%e2%80%99s-metropolis-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=1283","title":{"rendered":"Fritz Lang\u2019s Metropolis, Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Metropolis_bigbust_s.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1228\" title=\"Metropolis_bigbust_s\" src=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Metropolis_bigbust_s.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>Although KINO\u2019s DVD and Blu-ray contain an hour-long  documentary on the history of restoring Fritz Lang\u2019s <strong>Metropolis<\/strong> to its near-original running time, TCM aired a separate  doc this past Sunday, specifically dealing with the discovery of the rare  footage in Argentina,  and the historians\u2019 efforts to get the Germans to believe they had something of  incredible importance.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/m\/3713_MetropolisRefound.htm\">Metropolis  Refound \/ Metropolis refundada<\/a><\/strong> (2010) feels like a treasure hunt wrapped in suspense, drama, tragedy, and  humour, and while not currently available on home video, it\u2019s worth catching on  TCM because the filmmakers also delve into Argentina\u2019s own challenges in  finding and preserving the country\u2019s film heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a treasure hunt comes up physically empty, as was  the case with the unfinished Third Reich revisionist drama <strong>Life Goes On<\/strong> \/ <strong>Das Leben  Geht Weiter<\/strong> (1945). The absurd stories and weird dramatic peaks \u00a0surrounding the making of  this film were beautifully captured in a 2002 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/d\/3165_DasLebenGehtWeiter.htm\">documentary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of the Argentinian copy undoubtedly spawns  speculation of what other previously lost footage or films may exist in vaults,  with the top Most Wanted including Lon Chaney\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0018097\/\" >London after Midnight<\/a><\/strong> (1927), Orson Welles\u2019 uncut <strong>The  Magnificent Ambersons<\/strong> (1942), and Eric von Stroheims complete <strong>Greed<\/strong> (1924) &amp; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0184586\/\" >The Honeymoon<\/a><\/strong> (1928).<\/p>\n<p>More recently, 75 films from the teens and twenties were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collider.com\/2010\/06\/06\/john-ford-upstream-discovered-new-zealand-vault-seventy-five-early-us-films\/\" >discovered<\/a> in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/2010\/jun\/07\/john-ford-movie-new-zealand\" >New  Zealand<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=127530994\" >film  vault<\/a>, among which is an early John Ford film <strong>Upstream<\/strong>, from 1927.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
