{"id":14424,"date":"2016-10-11T01:13:27","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T05:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14424"},"modified":"2016-10-11T01:21:53","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T05:21:53","slug":"nostalgia-for-tales-of-1950s-paranoia-strange-invaders-1983-and-its-brethren","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14424","title":{"rendered":"Nostalgia for Tales of 1950s Paranoia: Strange Invaders (1983) and Its Brethren"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14457\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/StrangeInvaders_UK_poster-1024x771.jpg\" alt=\"StrangeInvaders_UK_poster\" width=\"384\" height=\"289\" \/>Primarily a producer, Michael Laughlin&#8217;s brief career as writer-director yielded a pair of tales about insular communities affected by unwanted forces.<\/p>\n<p>Both the slasher film <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14428\"><strong>Strange Behavior<\/strong> \/ <strong>Dead Kids<\/strong><\/a> (1981) and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14423\">Strange Invaders<\/a><\/strong> (1983) were co-written by future <strong>Gods and Monsters<\/strong> writer-director Bill Condon, and <strong>Invaders<\/strong> makes its needed debut on Blu via Twilight in a nice special edition that features one of John Addison&#8217;s best scores, if not one of the best evocations of a lush, romantic, &#8216;busy&#8217;\u00a0sci-fi score.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14429\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/StrangeBehavior.gif\" alt=\"StrangeBehavior\" width=\"118\" height=\"166\" \/>Behavior<\/strong> was eventually released on Blu via Severin Films, but I&#8217;ve ported the prior review for the Elite release from the KQEK.com archives, and supplemented the theme of alien invasion and paranoia with related archival reviews, including R.W. Goodwin&#8217;s goofy <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14437\">Alien Trespass<\/a><\/strong> (2009) that goes for Technicolor gloss in the desert; Larry Blamire&#8217;s ridiculous <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14440\">The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra<\/a><\/strong> (2001), spoofing cheapjack alien invasion and low budget weirdness; and Joe Dante&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14432\">Matinee<\/a><\/strong> (1993), an affectionate poke at the gimmicky sci-fi \/ horror tales unleashed to fifties kids by the likes of William Castle.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next<\/em>\u00a0is the first two of five (yes, <em>five<\/em>) podcast interviews this week: <strong>Miss Peregrine&#8217;s Home for Peculiar Children<\/strong> composers Michael Higham and Matthew Margeson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
