{"id":14616,"date":"2016-11-01T13:28:37","date_gmt":"2016-11-01T17:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14616"},"modified":"2016-11-01T13:34:12","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T17:34:12","slug":"cold-war-propaganda-strategic-air-command-1955-jet-pilot-1957","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14616","title":{"rendered":"Cold War Propaganda: Strategic Air Command (1955) + Jet Pilot (1957)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14623\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Strategic_Air_Command_-_1955-_Poster.png\" alt=\"Strategic_Air_Command_-_1955-_Poster\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Strategic_Air_Command_-_1955-_Poster.png 336w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Strategic_Air_Command_-_1955-_Poster-202x300.png 202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>I&#8217;ve paired a review of Anthony Mann&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14615\">Strategic Air Command<\/a><\/strong> (1955) with\u00a0Howard Hughes&#8217; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14612\">Jet Pilot<\/a><\/strong> (1957) because both fall into the categories of military propaganda, and something one can brand as airplane porn &#8211; movies in which the elegance of then-cutting edge aircraft are more than background or tertiary characters in a story.<\/p>\n<p>Call it romantic, fetishistic, or pure adulation of planes, but these films frequently feature\u00a0gorgeous, recurring montages of vehicles in flight while the human sagas are put on pause.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14625\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/JetPilot_poster.jpg\" alt=\"JetPilot_poster\" width=\"300\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/JetPilot_poster.jpg 492w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/JetPilot_poster-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Jet Pilot<\/strong>\u00a0is notorious for being one of two Hughes-supervised productions (the other being <strong>The Conqueror<\/strong>) that went through multiple directors and reshoots to keep the filmed aircrafts modern, only to have the movie\u00a0remain unreleased when studio RKO ran into serious financial troubles, and ultimately closure.<\/p>\n<p>SAC\u00a0is a more balanced drama &#8211; there&#8217;s no weird comedic moments, Soviet stereotypes, and Hughesian fixations with ample bust size &#8211; but it has a particularly unusual subtext that&#8217;s either intentional, purely of my own fantasy, or something modern audiences might mistakenly take from what&#8217;s supposed to be a drama of dedication to one&#8217;s country, fidelity to its safety, and personal sacrifice for the greater good of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Olive&#8217;s release of SAC was taken from crisp print, and is new to DVD and Blu in Region 1 land, whereas <strong>Jet Pilot<\/strong> has yet to enjoy even a decent DVD edition. I&#8217;ve ported over\u00a0my\u00a0review of KOCH Media&#8217;s Region 2 release from the KQEK.com archives, as that&#8217;s probably the best transfer on disc right now. RKO&#8217;s catalogue is controlled by Warner Bros., but there&#8217;s less interest on releasing on disc\u00a0the final films produced \/ distributed\u00a0by RKO, perhaps because of quirky\u00a0rights\u00a0issues, or those final titles just aren&#8217;t as sexy as older films in the studio&#8217;s catalogue. It&#8217;s a pity, because as a medium-major, RKO produced quality productions, and had one of the most unique logos in Hollywood:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n3Y6Z0Lh-4U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming Soon:<\/em>\u00a0Sean Ellis&#8217; WWII drama <strong>Anthropoid<\/strong> (2016) from Elevation Pictures + the WII suspense thriller <strong>Eye of the Needle<\/strong> (1981) from Twilight Time.<\/p>\n<p>Oh.
