{"id":14885,"date":"2016-12-06T01:51:43","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T06:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14885"},"modified":"2016-12-06T13:40:58","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T18:40:58","slug":"a-runaway-classic-runaway-train-1985","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14885","title":{"rendered":"A Runaway Classic: Runaway Train (1985)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14889\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RunawayTrain_poster-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"RunawayTrain_poster\" width=\"317\" height=\"422\" \/>Newly posted is a review of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14882\">Runaway Train<\/a><\/strong> (1985), one of the best films produced by schlockmeisters Menachem Goland and Yoram Globus for <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=12461\">Cannon Films<\/a>, and released on Blu via Twilight Time.<\/p>\n<p>31 years since its release, this Oscar Nominated classic still manages to grip viewers because of its skillful execution.<\/p>\n<p>I never managed to catch the film in theatres, but like many, saw the film on home video countless times, and yet whenever I sit down to watch Andrei Konchalovsky\u2019s taut drama, I become so invested in the characters that I forget the twists and turns.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a movie capped with one of the most striking\u00a0finales ever filmed, a depiction of beautiful madness and sublime revenge that\u2019s part operatic, part poetry, but wholly gut-wrenching.<\/p>\n<p>Konchalovsky made three straight dramas for Cannon, but <strong>Runaway Train <\/strong>undoubtedly showed a knack for action montages, attracting Warner Bros. to hire him for their goofball, buddy film action comedy <strong>Tango &amp; Cash<\/strong> (1989), an underrated masterpiece of explosive nonsense, fast quips, and incessant kabooms.<\/p>\n<p>The director soon receded from such overt Hollywood extravaganzas, but <strong>Runaway Train<\/strong> represents a rare gem during Cannon\u2019s golden period, which also resulted in <strong>That Championship Season<\/strong> (1982) and <strong>Barfly<\/strong> (1987), each\u00a0deserving special edition treatment on Blu in North America.<\/p>\n<p>From the KQEK.com archives I&#8217;ve ported over a review of <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14877\">La-La Land&#8217;s packed soundtrack CD<\/a> which features both LP and film versions of the score.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> Twilight Time\u2019s other train-centric drama, Robert Aldrich\u2019s mean, brutal, and oddly funny <strong>Emperor of the North<\/strong> (1973).<\/p>\n<p>Cheers,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
