{"id":16730,"date":"2017-10-05T02:11:59","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T06:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16730"},"modified":"2017-10-05T12:00:20","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T16:00:20","slug":"tales-of-long-gone-hot-summers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16730","title":{"rendered":"Tales of Long Gone Hot Summers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With early October temperatures still floating in the high teens and low 20s, it seems fitting to buck the trend for fall-themed movies in favour of two steamy sexually provocative tales set in the sweltering, southern U.S. summertime.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16733\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16733\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16733 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/LongHotSummer1958_poster_German.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"269\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sommer Einz: Heisse UND Lange !<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Twilight Time\u2019s mined one of my favourite dramas for a Blu-ray release: Martin Ritt\u2019s 1958 film version of William Faulkner\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=5509\">The Long, Hot Summer<\/a><\/strong>, which launched the teaming of power couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.<\/p>\n<p>The pair are surrounded by Lee Remick, Tony Franciosa, and Orson Welles, plus Angela Lansbury and Richard Anderson. Jerry Wald\u2019s production just glows \u2013 among Fox\u2019s stellar producers, Wald knew how to package sex, drama, and gorgeous visuals into a CinemaScope production, and this is surely one of many that deserve to be seen on the big screen, with its stereophonic sound delivering provocative and witty dialogue, and Alex North\u2019s sultry score.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16734\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16734\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16734\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/SuddenlylastSummer_poster_german.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/SuddenlylastSummer_poster_german.jpg 310w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/SuddenlylastSummer_poster_german-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sommer Zwei: Plotzlich UND Zaftig !<\/p><\/div>\n<p>TT also released one of the stranger Tennessee Williams adaptations, the Gothic drama (or emotional horror tale) <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16720\">Suddenly, Last Summer<\/a><\/strong> (1959).<\/p>\n<p>The powerhouse cast features Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Katherine Hepburn, Mercedes McCambridge, and Albert Dekker. <strong>Suddenly<\/strong> has its flaws, but director Joseph L. Mankiewicz managed to balance the cast&#8217;s egos, their brooding personal problems, Gore Vidal\u2019s raw script, and the looming persona of producer Sam Spiegel into a magnetic drama.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor\u2019s great, but Hepburn is amazing playing an ice cold manipulative mother plotting to have memories of her son\u2019s death carved out of her daughter-in-law\u2019s brain.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming shortly<\/em> are reviews of the Tom Cruise dud <strong>The Mummy<\/strong> (2017) and its superior counterpart <strong>Tutankhamun<\/strong> \/ aka <strong>The Mummy of Tutankhamun<\/strong> (2016), and I\u2019m finishing up on the first podcast tied to Video Store Day.
