{"id":16992,"date":"2017-11-16T13:41:17","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T18:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16992"},"modified":"2017-11-16T13:56:05","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T18:56:05","slug":"from-fake-news-to-chamber-drama-3-by-woody-allen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16992","title":{"rendered":"From Fake News to Chamber Drama: 3 by Woody Allen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The trio of Woody Allen films in today\u2019s review set features two related works, and one illustrative of Allen\u2019s periodic dip into straight drama.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17006\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16984\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17006\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-17006\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TakeTheMoneyAndRun_Fr_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TakeTheMoneyAndRun_Fr_poster.jpg 600w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/TakeTheMoneyAndRun_Fr_poster-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;Take the herb and recuse yourself&#8217;.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16984\">Take the Money and Run<\/a> <\/strong>(1969), new on Blu via KL Studio Classics, marked Allen\u2019s first formal step as star \/ director \/ co-writer, and has him playing Virgil Starkwell, an idiot wholly incapable of robbing anything or anyone, but genuinely falling for a pretty girl (Janet Margolin) \u2013 for a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take<\/strong> predates Allen\u2019s near-perfect mockumentary <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=15143\">Zelig<\/a><\/strong> (1983), and contains a similar if cruder use of archival, faux archival, narration, and on-camera interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Allen then carried over the format in a short film for PBS that was reportedly pulled close to its 1972 airing date, and remains commercially unreleased.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16987\">Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story<\/a><\/strong> (1971) has him playing a fake Nixon confidant and ridicules the then-President with assorted interpolation of real and fake news segments and interviews, culminating in a lengthy unflattering assessment of the leader\u2019s lack of \u2018facial trustworthiness.\u2019 You can see why PBS panicked, but it\u2019s peculiar how the short has never been showcased on home video; at present it remains viewable in that vast grey zone, YouTube, taken from an Italian subtitled print with a serious (deliberate?) scratch running down the middle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17005\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/September1987_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/September1987_poster.jpg 350w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/September1987_poster-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Whereas <strong>Crisis<\/strong> is a portent of the magic to follow in <strong>Zelig<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=16989\">September<\/a><\/strong> (1987) marked Allen\u2019s more successful attempt to wade into Ingmar Bergman terrain with a drama about\u00a0 fragile woman (Mia Farrow) confronted by unwanted realities the night a power outage freezes a dinner party at her country house.<\/p>\n<p>Twilight Time\u2019s Blu sports a striking transfer of one of Allen\u2019s most beautiful and visually soothing films, as shot by the great Carlo Di Palma (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/b\/2776_BlowUp.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Blow-Up<\/strong><\/a>). It\u2019s also an extraordinary production with a potent cast, including veterans Denholm Elliott, Jack Warden, and Elaine Stritch.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next: <\/em>review of Netflix\u2019s other recent success, the network\u2019s exclusive series <strong>GLOW<\/strong> (2017), one of the sharpest, funniest series in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
