{"id":17056,"date":"2017-11-28T14:10:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T19:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17056"},"modified":"2017-11-28T14:21:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T19:21:24","slug":"calling-hedy-lamarr-inventor-glamour-goddess-and-hollywood-icon-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17056","title":{"rendered":"Calling Hedy Lamarr: Inventor, Glamour Goddess, and Hollywood Icon &#8211; Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier in 2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=15277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I wrote a blog<\/a> and reviewed a pair of docs whose respective directors examined in most peculiar ways Hedy Lamarr\u2019s role as an inventor of frequency hopping, credited as the precursor to Wifi and Bluetooth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17060\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/HedyLamarr_Bombshell_poster2-614x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"500\" \/>Even if taken in as two parts of a series on the actress-inventor, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=15272\" target=\"window\">Calling Hedy Lamarr<\/a><\/strong> (2004) and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=15274\" target=\"window\">Hedy Lamarr: Secrets of a Hollywood Star<\/a><\/strong> (2006) proved very unsatisfying, and Alexandra Dean\u2019s 2017 examination <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17055\"><strong>Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story<\/strong><\/a> (2017) provides the needed and necessary wrap-up, using a more traditional structure to chronicle the atypical life of a Hollywood icon \u2013 the \u2018world\u2019s most beautiful woman\u2019 by day, and perpetual inventor by night.<\/p>\n<p>The film is currently screening at Toronto\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/boxoffice.hotdocs.ca\/websales\/pages\/info.aspx?evtinfo=66406~fff311b7-cdad-4e14-9ae4-a9905e1b9cb0&amp;epguid=a1a41036-cbe1-4f35-bc34-1ed13d4bd525&amp;\" target=\"window\">Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema<\/a>, and unlike the prior docs, it&#8217;ll more than likely enjoy a wide home video release (especially since the production has PBS involvement).<\/p>\n<p>After delving into the review of the 2017 doc, I\u2019d strongly suggest checking out <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=15277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the prior blog + reviews<\/a>, as the filmmakers of the prior docs present looser, subjective views, and offer some additional archival material, and interviews (many of whom have likely passed on).<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17066\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ALiveInWaves_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"61\" height=\"92\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ALiveInWaves_poster.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ALiveInWaves_poster-197x300.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 61px) 100vw, 61px\" \/>Coming soon:<\/em> reviews of <strong>A Life in Waves<\/strong> (2017), Brett Whitcomb\u2019s doc on modular synth pionner &amp; composer Suzanne Ciani, making it\u2019s Toronto Premiere tonight at the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsite.theroyal.to\/movies\/royal-stompbox-women-synthelectronic-pioneers-a-life-in-waves-the-delian-mode\/\" target=\"window\">Royal Cinema<\/a> alongside <strong>The Delian Mode<\/strong> (2009), a short doc on BBC Radiophonics Workshop whiz Delia Derbyshire by Canadian Kara Blake, who will offer an intro at tonight\u2019s screening.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
