{"id":17293,"date":"2018-01-22T13:11:42","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T18:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17293"},"modified":"2018-01-23T14:00:54","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T19:00:54","slug":"bloodying-it-up-when-youre-going-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17293","title":{"rendered":"Bloodying It Up When You&#8217;re Going Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17295\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Lift1983_Dutch_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Lift1983_Dutch_poster.jpg 551w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Lift1983_Dutch_poster-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Truth be told: I\u2019d never heard of Dick Maas until two Blue Underground Blu-ray editions appeared on Halloween, sporting the writer-director-producer\u2019s first feature film <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17284\">The Lift <\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17284\">\/ <strong>De lift<\/strong><\/a> (1983) and his later American remake <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17284\">Down<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17284\"> \/ <strong>The Shaft<\/strong><\/a>, which features a jaw-dropping cast of up-and-coming and character actors \u2013 namely headliners James Marshall (<strong>Twin Peaks<\/strong>) and Naomi Watts &#8211; and had the misfortune of being released the week of 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>Maas\u2019 other film \u2013 also released by BU, and to be reviewed later \u2013 is <strong>Amsterdamned<\/strong> (1988), and features a massive boat chase through the Dutch city\u2019s canals, an echo of the incredible boat chase in <strong>Puppet on a Chain<\/strong> (1971); one of the stunt personnel on the latter was the father of <strong>Down<\/strong>\u2019s own exceptional stunt-coordinator, Willem de Beukelaer.<\/p>\n<p>Maas made a name for himself with the comedic film series <strong>Flodder<\/strong>, which was reportedly packed with outrageous stunts and explains the high quality of the practical effects and stunts in <strong>Down<\/strong>, not to mention the superb action scenes which aren\u2019t grand or expansive but are beautifully coordinated, shot, and edited, showcasing the craft of its makers &amp; performers instead of AVID editing software.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve packed both reviews into one entry because it&#8217;s a comparative assessment of the two films, but it still features proper reviews of each film.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> a review of two Twilight Time discs featuring perhaps lesser-regarded films beholding two fine performances by their respective leads \u2013 George C.
