{"id":17990,"date":"2018-05-26T01:12:45","date_gmt":"2018-05-26T05:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17990"},"modified":"2018-05-26T01:28:31","modified_gmt":"2018-05-26T05:28:31","slug":"tjff-2018-postwar-tales-dramatic-darkly-comedic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17990","title":{"rendered":"TJFF 2018: Postwar Tales Dramatic + Darkly Comedic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Screened at the recent TJFF 2018 were a pair of post-WWII films dealing with the flight of refugees, but with very different stories and struggles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-18004\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ByeByeGermany2017_poster_German.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ByeByeGermany2017_poster_German.jpg 230w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/ByeByeGermany2017_poster_German-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/>The 2017 production of <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17988\"><strong>Bye Bye Germany<\/strong><\/a> (which makes a bit more sense than the original German title <strong>Es war einmal in Deutschland<\/strong>, aka &#8216;Once Upon a Time in Germany&#8217;) offers a darkly comedic take on Jewish refugees caught in the boredom of an internment camp.<\/p>\n<p>The catch-22&#8217;s are simple: without money, no chance of immigrating to the U.S., but without a certificate, no chance of earning money, hence a scheme of sorts to sell overpriced linen to war-weary Germans, except leader David Bermann is being investigated by the U.S. Army for&#8230; something.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-18005\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/EarthCriesOut1949_poster_Ital.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/EarthCriesOut1949_poster_Ital.jpg 230w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/EarthCriesOut1949_poster_Ital-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/>More intriguing is <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17981\"><strong>The Earth Cries Out<\/strong><\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=17981\"><strong>Il grido della terra<\/strong><\/a>, a 1949 case-specific dramatization of Jews escaping an internment camp in Italy for British-governed Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the review I&#8217;ve added a YouTube link to a fascinating Q&amp;A conducted in 2012 at the Primo Levi Center in NYC, with the writer&#8217;s daughter and key historians contextualizing and recounting both the film&#8217;s status from lost to rediscovered document, and the incredible life of story writer Lewis Gittler.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> Jacques Demy\u2019s <strong>Model Shop<\/strong> (1969) from Twilight Time, and <strong>Lola<\/strong> (1961) from Criterion.<\/p>\n<p>Cheers,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
