{"id":18088,"date":"2018-06-22T01:49:52","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T05:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=18088"},"modified":"2018-06-22T02:48:22","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T06:48:22","slug":"two-troubled-teens-blue-denim-1959","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=18088","title":{"rendered":"Two Troubled Teens: Blue Denim (1959)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18108\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CarolLynley_s.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CarolLynley_s.jpg 350w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CarolLynley_s-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Prior to the blockbuster disaster\u00a0<strong>The Poseidon Adventure\u00a0<\/strong>(1972), Carol Lynley had worked her way up through teen roles before reprising Janet, the troubled teen she played in the original 1958 Broadway production of <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=18086\"><strong>Blue Denim<\/strong><\/a>, directed by famed stage and occasional screen director Joshua Logan (<a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=4349\"><strong>Picnic<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Camelot<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Fox apparently saw value in tackling the play for a film version, and while the hot topic of abortion is never stated directly, it becomes the main crisis which brings the young couple together, divides their families, and leads to a finale that&#8217;s in line with the era&#8217;s conservative rules which were still governed by the old Production Code.<\/p>\n<p>What still resonates long after the End Credits and Bernard Herrmann&#8217;s score have wrapped is Lynley&#8217;s compelling performance.\u00a0It&#8217;s probably the key role that enabled her career to progress towards more adult roles, culminating in probably her finest of the 1960s (and maybe her career), Otto Preminger&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=14246\"><strong>Bunny Lake is Missing<\/strong><\/a> (1965).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18109\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/BrandonDeWilde.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/BrandonDeWilde.jpg 350w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/BrandonDeWilde-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Co-star Brandon deWilde also fared well, transitioning from the cute child star in <strong>Shane<\/strong> (1953)\u00a0\u00a0to a more mature role as &#8216;promising&#8217; son Arthur, and although he later appeared in <strong>All Fall Down<\/strong> (1962) and\u00a0<strong>Hud<\/strong> (1963), much of his final work lay in TV before he was killed at age 30 in a traffic accident.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=18086\"><strong>Blue Denim<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s taken a long time to make to to home video &#8211; Fox released a MOD DVD-R &#8211; and Twilight Time&#8217;s Blu-ray sports a crisp transfer that also showcases Herrmann&#8217;s peculiarly familiar score. It&#8217;s also one the handful of films directed by esteemed screenwriter Philip Dunne whose career at Fox spanned several decades.<\/p>\n<p>The following series of posters indicate the various approaches in selling the film&#8217;s unspoken issue, first by highlighting &#8220;lost innocence&#8221;
