{"id":19149,"date":"2019-05-02T03:53:53","date_gmt":"2019-05-02T07:53:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19149"},"modified":"2019-05-02T12:59:04","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T16:59:04","slug":"podcast-interview-with-les-miserables-john-murphy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19149","title":{"rendered":"Podcast interview with LES MISERABLES&#8217; John Murphy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19153\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/LesMiserables_DavidOyelowo_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"253\" \/>Although this stellar BBC production of Victor Hugo\u2019s epic novel has yet to make it to Blu-ray in North America, its gritty content may finally distance the book from the popular 1980 musical (affectionately called Les Mis) which to many, is the first production that comes to mind.<\/p>\n<p>The original <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19147\">Les Miserables<\/a><\/strong> is no easy tome to adapt for film and TV, yet TV may be the best venue for the lengthy tale, as feature-length attempts for the big screen had to present compressed versions of the riveting drama as the lives of an escaped felon and his dogged inspector-hunter in 1800s France span a roughly 17 year period.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve posted a review of the 6-part mini-series to support my recent interview with composer John Murphy, who returns from a self-imposed hiatus after a busy period scoring action, comic book, sci-fi and horror films up to 2015.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-19154\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/JohnMurphy_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/JohnMurphy_m.jpg 350w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/JohnMurphy_m-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/>Murphy\u2019s major credits include Danny Boyle\u2019s <strong>28 Days Later <\/strong>(2002) and <strong>Sunshine<\/strong> (2007), and Michael Mann\u2019s big screen version of <strong>Miami Vice<\/strong> (2006).<\/p>\n<p>Previously, I interviewed Murphy when the stunt-heavy heist drama <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/a\/3539_Armored2009.htm\" target=\"window\">Armored<\/a><\/strong> (2009) debuted on video and its taut soundtrack on CD <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=831\" target=\"window\">in 2010<\/a>, and five years later when he released the album <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/directory.libsyn.com\/episode\/index\/id\/3345717\" target=\"window\">Anonymous<\/a><\/strong>, based on a rejected score.<\/p>\n<p>Chatting with down-to-earth Murphy is always a pleasure, but it\u2019s especially rewarding to hear in his voice the energy and zeal for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19147\">Les Miserables<\/a><\/strong>, his first mini-series that&#8217;s blessed with a concise score that may well make its way to CD, and perhaps LP.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll have an IGTV excerpt version shortly, but the audio-only podcast is available on my <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/music\/podcasts\/portal\/u\/0#p:id=playpodcast\/series&amp;a=101436605\" target=\"window\">GooglePlay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/ca\/podcast\/kqek.com-digital-big-head\/id955326826?mt=2\" target=\"window\">iTunes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.libsyn.com\/episode\/index\/id\/9614960?stats-code=john-murphy-les-miserables\" target=\"window\">Libsyn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/mondomark\/podcast-interview-with-composer-john-murphy-2019-05-01\" target=\"window\">SoundCloud<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stitcher.com\/podcast\/kqek-digital?refid=stpr\" target=\"window\">Stitcher<\/a> channels, with YouTube to follow.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> review of Allan Dwan&#8217;s noir thriller <strong>River&#8217;s Edge<\/strong> (1957), new on Blu from Twilight Time; and KINO&#8217;s Blu-ray release of the restored <strong>Becky Sharp<\/strong> (1935), the first feature film shot in 3-strip Technicolor!<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
