{"id":19265,"date":"2019-05-21T12:47:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T16:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19265"},"modified":"2019-05-21T13:01:32","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T17:01:32","slug":"a-vibrant-return-for-becky-sharp-1935","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19265","title":{"rendered":"A Vibrant Return for Becky Sharp (1935)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Way, way back when I was in film school, TVO\u2019s Elwy Yost had a short segment showing a clip from <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19264\"><strong>Becky Sharp<\/strong><\/a>, the first feature film shot in Technicolor\u2019s 3-strip format.<\/p>\n<p>Following the 1955 Jane Russell-Jeff Chandler drama <strong>Foxfire<\/strong>, the cumbersome 3-strip format was superseded with a single strip of film that recorded all three colours \u2013 red, blue, and green.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19269\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/BeckySharp1935_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/BeckySharp1935_poster.jpg 425w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/BeckySharp1935_poster-159x300.jpg 159w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After UCLA\u2019s initial restoration of <a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=19264\"><strong>Becky Sharp<\/strong><\/a> debuted in a limited release around 1992, the film kind of vanished, never to appear on home video until beat up copies emerged on tape and DVD, all either taken from B&amp;W sources, or the 2-colour Cinecolor format, which may or may not have been the 85 or 67 min. version.<\/p>\n<p>10 years ago, I reviewed the Alpha DVD, which looked &amp; sounded ugly, but it was the best available source, and it took another decade until the new restoration team scoured the globe looking for better sources to assemble a better version, so I&#8217;ve overhauled the prior review substantively. Still waiting for its antecedent to materialize on Blu &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/d\/3479_Dixiana_LaCucaracha.htm\" target=\"window\">La Cucaracha<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(1934), the first 3-strip live action short &#8211; but apparently another rarity, the 3-strip musical\u00a0<strong>The Dancing Pirate<\/strong> (1936) was recently discovered in good shape, with a restoration currently underway.<\/p>\n<p>Now if only a 2-strip print of MGM&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Rogue_Song\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rogue Song<\/strong><\/a> (1930) would materialize&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> the very odd political comedy-thriller\u00a0<strong>The Big Fix<\/strong> (1978), new on Blu from Twilight Time.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for reading,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
