{"id":3775,"date":"2011-11-03T16:29:27","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T20:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/?p=2551"},"modified":"2011-11-03T16:29:27","modified_gmt":"2011-11-03T20:29:27","slug":"raoul-ruiz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=3775","title":{"rendered":"Raoul Ruiz"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2552\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 130px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MysteriesOfLisbon_poster1_s.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2552\" title=\"MysteriesOfLisbon_poster1_s\" src=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MysteriesOfLisbon_poster1_s.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">I&#39;m sorry, but she&#39;s not the star&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With very rare exceptions in North America, serial  productions made for TV in Europe are on  occasion released to cinemas in easier to digest morsels for international  audiences, of which Ingmar Bergman may be king of the mini-series.<\/p>\n<p>His roster of TV productions edited down into feature-length  versions include <strong>Scenes from a Marriage<\/strong> (1973), cut down from 5 hours to 2.5; <strong>Face  to Face<\/strong> (1976), 3.5 hours distilled to 2.25; and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/f\/2720_FannyAlexCrit5DVD.htm\">Fanny  &amp; Alexander <\/a><\/strong>(1978), reduced  from 5 hours to an Oscar-winning 3 hour version.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, the 3-part crime drama based on Stig  Larsson\u2019s first three Millenium novels\u00a0 &#8211; <strong>The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo<\/strong>, <strong>The Girl Who Played with Fire<\/strong>, and <strong>The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet\u2019s Nest<\/strong> (all 2009) &#8211; were theatrical distillations of a longer 6-part series than ran  on Swedish TV, and Olivier Assayas\u2019 <strong>Carlos<\/strong> (2010) was similarly knocked down from 5 hours to just under 3 for cinemas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2553\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 130px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MysteriesOfLisbon_poster2_s.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2553\" title=\"MysteriesOfLisbon_poster2_s\" src=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/MysteriesOfLisbon_poster2_s.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230; They are.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So there\u2019s nothing unusual with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqek.com\/dvd_reviews\/m\/3938_MysteriesOfLisbon.htm\">Mysteries  of Lisbon \/ Mist\u00e9rios de Lisboa<\/a><\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=3770\">M<\/a>] (2010), Raoul Ruiz\u2019 epic of  unfortunate circumstances and poor social behaviour, which has been condensed  into a 4 hour feature film from a 6 part Portuguese TV mini-series. I\u2019ve  uploaded a review that addresses its pros and cons at being shorter, and a link  to a French interview with Ruiz, conducted a few months prior to his death.<\/p>\n<p>As a film, the pacing is variable in spots, but as an HD  experience, it\u2019s absolutely stunning, with Ruiz\u2019 deceptively simple visual  style paying off on the big screen. The film begins its run at the TIFF Bell  Lightbox <a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2011\/3600000673\" >November  11<\/a>, with a 10 minute intermission, but you might want to avoid heavy coffee  consumption that day.<\/p>\n<p>Just a suggestion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
