I never got around to reading his classic book The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1929-1968, but it’s still on my hit list (when time permits). The auteur theory is still pretty divisive in the way it places the director as the primary creator of a film, marginzalizing contributions of the producer, writer, the actor-producer, the writer-producer, or studio head.

There’s no denying icons like Alfred Hitchcock deserve the label – Hitchcock’s story team searched out for specific types of tales that could be shaped into a formula from which the director could indulge in his fixations for blondes, montages, death scenes, and mordant humour – but there are other directors whose works are important, yet their involvement with the film wasn’t as pronounced. I like John Frankenheimer’s comment on The Manchurian Candidate DVD where he explains a blurry shot in the opening sequence wasn’t an artistic statement, but the best take of Sinatra’s performance.

There is value to the auteur theory as well as steaming bullshit, and if the movement is guitly of a major negative, it’s validating insane analytical B.S. for things that simply aren’t true; were never intentional; were not pre-designed; and are not influenced by a director’s socio-economic-religious worldviews. Decisions in filmmaking sometimes occur due to immediate, costly stressors that mandate a quick, smart reaction to ensure filming continues without creating a continuity boo-boo that’ll cost more to fix during post.

Sarris was recently featured in Gerald Peary’s 2009 doc For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism [M], and you can also find archival interviews with Sarris at TVOnatio’s archive, culled from several programs (most hosted by Elwy Yost).

Next: The Exorcist [M] has been turned into a stage play, and it may just work, since the focus isn’t to recapture the film’s wet bile but extrapolate on the moral and faith conflcits within William Blatty’s novel. Still, with Brooke Shields and Richard Chamberlain playing mother Chris MacNeil and Father Merrin, respectively, plus ‘magic’ trickery by Teller of Penn & Teller, who knows what’ll emerge when the play begins previews July 3 at the Geffen Playhouse.

Next-next: Cineplex is reportedly buying a quartet of AMC cinemas in Ontario. Is the U.S. company scaling back its Canuckle involvement, or have the theatres been underperforming, with the added cost of digital conversion making the quartet dead weight?

Related: the Independent ran a lengthy piece on Dave Norris, a London West End projection manager retiring as 35mm projectionists are transitioning to a life of obsolescence. Not exactly a perky tale.

Lastly: Toronto’s World’s Biggest Bookstore is closing in early 2013 as the building’s owner will not be renewing the lease held by current tenant Indigo Books & Music. The building used to be a bowling alley before owner Jack Cole, founder of Cole’s Books, bought the place and had it converted into one massive retail shop. The following Torontoist piece offers a detailed history of the store’s opening.

So without further ado, here’s the Soundtrack Release Tally:

.

.

.

.

REGULAR RELEASES:

Beat Records (Italy)

7 dollari sul rosso (Francesco De Masi)

Contro 4 bandiere (Riz Ortolani)

Eros perversion (Nico Fidenco)

Il ranch degli spietati (Francesco De Masi)

La montagna di luce (Francesco De Masi)

Piu’forte ragazzi!
