The effect is an atmosphere of absolute dread \u2013 grim and miserable due to the score\u2019s reliance on the same theme \u2013 and a pacing which moves like an ominous, foggy cloud. <strong>Prisoners<\/strong> should be taxing for meandering through just slight theme variations, but there\u2019s something about the way J\u00f3hannsson keeps the tempo irregular (or at least feigns a drifting musical pace) that\u2019s hypnotic, if not trance-inducing.<\/p>\n<p>A rare cluster of pulsing synth beats are present in a few cues such as \u201cThe Tall Man,\u201d but the rhythms and snarling, low-level synth chords mimic an unwanted chill, jarring the listener yet keeping one locked inside the score\u2019s grim arena by sticking to the same handful of thematic notes for consistency of mood.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy vibrato from a sparse group of strings and distorted bass lines are equally unsettling, and it\u2019s only in the lengthy final cue where J\u00f3hannsson provides some closure, with rising high notes, and a <em>slightly<\/em> warmer theme statement.<\/p>\n<p>Grim, yet deeply affecting for those with a predilection for minimalism and grimy emotional trauma.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 2014 Mark R.
