{"id":7826,"date":"2010-03-27T02:15:17","date_gmt":"2010-03-27T06:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/?p=699"},"modified":"2010-03-27T02:15:17","modified_gmt":"2010-03-27T06:15:17","slug":"avatar-gets-allocated-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=7826","title":{"rendered":"Avatar Gets Allocated in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 204px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/i917.photobucket.com\/albums\/ad14\/wegeewegee\/Avatar_BR_b.gif\" alt=\"10 weeks to get your enviro-smurf epic\" width=\"194\" height=\"240\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">10 weeks to get your enviro-smurf epic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To help Canadian merchants understand the allocation policy  for <strong>Avatar<\/strong> when it hits stores Thursday April 22 (Earth Day), Fox Home Video  sent a handy FAQ which makes it clear <strong>Avatar<\/strong> will debut as a plain movie-only  edition in 2D \u2013 nothing unexpected, since that info was already available in  February.<\/p>\n<p>What is surprising, however, is the film\u2019s limited  availability to merchants and buyers alike.<\/p>\n<p>As stated in Fox\u2019s FAQ:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAllocation will be heavily controlled by Fox and James  Cameron. The most likely reason is to ensure the market is not flooded and the  title sell [sic] through clean with very little returns\u2026 Avatar has been  offered as a one-time order only\u2026 This version will be available for 10 weeks  before being discontinued. A 3D Special Extended Edition is planned for 4th  quarter of 2010.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlooded\u201d seems a rather rich term, but the thinking is  perhaps it\u2019ll sate the rental market, satisfy those who must own the film, and  keep the film in a kind of limited circulation until the fall when  it  debuts in 3D Blu-ray as more 3D sets and 3D Blu-ray players make their way to  consumers.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s bold, proactive, or a means to keep the  film active in theatres while a legit home video version exists to buy, and  then to rent. The question is whether people will care to buy the film yet  again in the fall, or will there be a calming down period where those delighted  by the theatrical 3D experience won\u2019t even bother owning the film because<\/p>\n<p>a) the 3D process has earned more praise than the story, and  after several months, people might feel the story\u2019s weaknesses will be more  apparent on a flat\/2D home screen<\/p>\n<p>b) with 3D TV + player retail combos debuting for under  $4000 (or sets by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2010\/03\/10\/panasonic-3d-home-entertainment-system-goes-on-sale-to-a-country\/\" target=\"window\">Panasonic<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futureshop.ca\/en-CA\/category\/3d-tvs\/28804.aspx?path=a27912c8da35063cdd4deb20d9042f0fen01&amp;CMP=KNC-Google_3D\" target=\"window\">Samsung<\/a>,  and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-31021_3-10466032-260.html\" target=\"window\">Sony<\/a> roughly priced between $2200-$4000 Canadian),  exactly how successful will the nascent format be, since 1080i sets and lower  are selling for a pittance, now that average consumers are getting used to  1080p sets and Blu-ray players.
