{"id":7840,"date":"2010-09-14T22:58:07","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T05:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/?p=995"},"modified":"2010-09-14T22:58:07","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T05:58:07","slug":"995","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=7840","title":{"rendered":"The Bell Lightbox is Illuminated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/BellLightbox_sketch_s.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-996\" title=\"BellLightbox_sketch_s\" src=\"http:\/\/mondomark.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/BellLightbox_sketch_s.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>As most film festival fans know by this point, the Toronto  International Film Festival (TIFF) is well underway, and Sunday marked the  opening and public unveiling of the new Bell Lightbox \u2013 a multi-purpose  building that will function as a movie theatre (there are five theatres, with  different seating capacities), a learning centre, film resource centre, and  headquarters for the TIFF group.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll have more thoughts on the building, its\u2019 post-TIFF  activities, and such, but for now the focus is on the aims of its stewards, and  its\u2019 unveiling this past Sunday. Naturally, I had a commitment I was snookered  into maintaining, so in place of the photos and material I <em>would\u2019ve taken &amp; written<\/em>, here are some selected images and  thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Those wanting a more personable background on the building\u2019s  development pre-unveiling Sept. 12th should read this lengthy piece  at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walrusmagazine.com\/articles\/2010.09-film-city-of-cinema\/\" target=\"window\">The  Walrus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The opening of the Bell Lightbox was covered in <a href=\"http:\/\/torontoist.com\/2010\/09\/hey_guys_the_lightbox_is_open.php\" target=\"window\">Torontoist<\/a> (with pictures), and the street party \/ concert with K\u2019naan was highlighted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogto.com\/music\/2010\/09\/knaan_lights_up_the_crowd_at_sundays_tiff_block_party\/\" target=\"window\">BlogTO<\/a>.  The Star\u2019s coverage was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/tiff\/films\/article\/860104--k-naan-brightens-tiff-s-new-home-at-lightbox-opening\" target=\"window\">tepid<\/a> but they also offer a link to a video montage by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/videozone\/859030--tiff-lightbox\" target=\"window\">Canadian Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve heard nothing but rave reviews of the new theatres \u2013  particularly the 500-seat theatre which can exhibit everything (70mm, digital,  3D, and movies with live musical accompaniment) \u2013 so I\u2019m very keen on checking  out the theatrical roster when TIFF launches its Essential Cinema series  September 23.<\/p>\n<p>Film music fans should take note of the series, which will  include <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008050051292#filmnote\" target=\"window\">Caligari  in Concert<\/a><\/strong> (live score performance headed by Andrew Downing), DJ  Spooky\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008050052320#filmnote\" target=\"window\">Rebirth  of a Nation<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008050052852#filmnote\" target=\"_blank\">Greed<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008050052852#filmnote\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>with Do Make Say Think, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008050055571#filmnote\" target=\"window\">Metropolis<\/a><\/strong> with a new score for the uncut version by Gabriel Thibaudeau, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008140040924#filmnote\" target=\"window\">Man  with a Movie Camera<\/a><\/strong> scored by the Michael Nyman Band, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008140004654#filmnote\" target=\"window\">The  Passion of Joan of Arc<\/a><\/strong> and Richard Einhorn\u2019s Voices of Light, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/filmsandschedules\/tiffbelllightbox\/2010\/201008140040031#filmnote\" target=\"_blank\">Sherlock  Jr.<\/a><\/strong> with the Fern Lindzon Sextet.<\/p>\n<p>Further details and scheduling info can be found at TIFF\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.net\/essential\/specialevents\/inconcert?filter=ABC\" target=\"window\">In Concert<\/a> section.<\/p>\n<p>And since we\u2019re on the subject of classic movies given a new  spin with contemporary scores, I\u2019ll have an interview next week with Brandon  Hocura, who band VOWLS performed an original score to Kenji Mizoguchi\u2019s <strong>The Water Magician<\/strong> (1933) this past  summer at the <a href=\"http:\/\/shinsedai-fest.com\/2010\/05\/shinsedai-back-with-its-first-block-of-2010-films\/\" target=\"window\">Shinsedai  Cinema Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
