{"id":8577,"date":"2014-04-24T17:16:14","date_gmt":"2014-04-24T21:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8577"},"modified":"2014-04-27T02:01:10","modified_gmt":"2014-04-27T06:01:10","slug":"hot-docs-2014-advance-reviews-set-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8577","title":{"rendered":"HOT DOCS 2014: Reviews Set 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotdocs.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8496\" alt=\"HotDocs2014_logo\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_logo.jpg\" width=\"535\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_logo.jpg 535w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_logo-300x54.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotdocs.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hot Docs 2014<\/a> officially launches tonight, and in advance of the full programmes that\u2019ll make up each of the subsequent days between April 25 \u2013 May 4, I\u2019m posting sets of reviews reflecting some of the eclectic subjects typical of the film festival.<\/p>\n<p>If anything seems to characterize the films this year, it\u2019s the many filmmakers who tackled their subjects as director-cinematographers, applying their own striking visual sensibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8572\">The Darkside<\/a><\/strong>, for instance, offers 2.35:1 images framed like geometric patterns to convey a collection of ghost stories retold by actors, whereas <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8568\">The Overnighters<\/a><\/strong> emphasizes the physical surroundings and the changing faces of its subjects to show the effects a job boom in a town unable to house its workers have on workers and a generous Lutheran pastor.<\/p>\n<p>The maker of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8564\">Sacro GRA<\/a><\/strong> is similarly obsessed with striking angles to convey the various character strands in this loose portrait of the people who live in and around Rome\u2019s encircling highway. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8556\">Slums: Cities of Tomorrow<\/a><\/strong> is aglow with the colours of densely-packed residential structures throughout the world, and it\u2019s a visual tactic that supports the director\u2019s viewpoint of slums being the seeds of modern urban society rather than cesspools of crime.<\/p>\n<p>The last film in this quintet may end up nabbing a nomination or a prize for best cinematography, as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8549\">The Songs of Rice<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the most immersive and visually ravishing film I\u2019ve seen in a while. One can easily transpose its subject \u2013 the rice harvests in rural Thailand \u2013 for any local fruit or vegetable harvest in North America, but the blazing colours wouldn&#8217;t be as dynamic. Plus: you also wouldn\u2019t see the launching of some hand-crafted (and kind of scary) fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_Adv_Rev_Set_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8579\" alt=\"HotDocs2014_Adv_Rev_Set_1\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_Adv_Rev_Set_1.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_Adv_Rev_Set_1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/HotDocs2014_Adv_Rev_Set_1-300x81.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> another set of Hot Docs 2014 reviews, including <strong>Doc of the Dead<\/strong>, and <strong>Khrushchev Does America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
