{"id":8831,"date":"2014-05-15T01:53:37","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T05:53:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8831"},"modified":"2014-05-15T01:56:57","modified_gmt":"2014-05-15T05:56:57","slug":"tjff-2014-from-hollywood-to-nuremberg-john-ford-samuel-fuller-george-stevens-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8831","title":{"rendered":"TJFF 2014: From Hollywood to Nuremberg &#8211; John Ford, Samuel Fuller, George Stevens (2012)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tjff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8832 aligncenter\" alt=\"TJFF2014_banner\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/TJFF2014_banner.jpg\" width=\"535\" height=\"38\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/TJFF2014_banner.jpg 535w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/TJFF2014_banner-300x21.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I managed to catch several films at the 2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/tjff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Jewish Film Festival<\/a> (TJFF), and the first review is <b><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8826\">From Hollywood to Nuremberg: John Ford, Samuel Fuller, George Stevens<\/a><\/b> (2012), Christian Delage\u2019s excellent chronicle of three major Hollywood directors whose involvement with the creation and execution of the U.S. Army\u2019s First Motion Picture Unit resulted in the only colour cinematography of the D-Day landing and France\u2019s liberation, and colour footage of Nazi concentration camps.<\/p>\n<p>Like <b><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=8588\">Khrushchev Does America<\/a><\/b> (2013), which recently screened at the 2014 Hot Docs Film Festival, Delage\u2019s narrative relies exclusively on archival material, and he\u2019s mined several important resources to balance backstory, facts, and rare footage. Running just 53 mins., it\u2019s as long as it needs to be, and like the Khrushchev doc, proves filmmakers can tell compelling stories without attention-deficit editing and elaborate sound montages (or a music score, for that matter).<\/p>\n<p>The next wave of updates will be interpolated with more TJFF reviews, including notable actors (Claire Bloom), writers (Sheldon Leonard), and a slice of local history (Toronto&#8217;s Spadina Avenue).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
