{"id":9570,"date":"2014-09-03T16:56:16","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T20:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9570"},"modified":"2014-09-03T16:56:55","modified_gmt":"2014-09-03T20:56:55","slug":"macgillivray-freeman-films-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9570","title":{"rendered":"MacGillivray Freeman Films, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_cvr_m.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9582\" alt=\"ToFly_Beta_cvr_m\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_cvr_m.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_cvr_m.jpg 350w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_cvr_m-183x300.jpg 183w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>I went a little overboard in what was supposed to be a single review of an IMAX film released on Betamax (yes, <em>really<\/em>) to illustrate one of many films unavailable on disc, let alone as a digital download, but it sort of expanded into a four-film, mini-portrait of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macgillivrayfreemanfilms.com\/site\/\" target=\"_blank\">MacGillivray Freeman Films<\/a>, a highly prolific production company with a mandate to educate the world of Nature\u2019s fragile beauty using the cinematic tools of artisans Greg MacGillivray and Jim Freeman.<\/p>\n<p>Both honed their skills making documentaries on surfing during the late sixties, and defined their own visual style \u2013 grandiose wide angle footage of underwater or aerial subjects, often in large film formats like IMAX.<\/p>\n<p>Their subjects covered terrain high and low, and in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9557\">To Fly!<\/a><\/strong> (1976), commissioned by the Smithsonian to celebrate America\u2019s aviation history during the country\u2019s bicentennial year, was hugely successful, enjoying a long run at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and getting a release on VHS an Betamax videotape.<\/p>\n<p>I bought the film off Ebay because it was part of a batch of films unavailable on disc (and two years later, most of my purchases are still unavailable), and quite frankly, it sounded neat \u2013 aerial footage in IMAX, edited in a style that undoubtedly emphasized shots rather than fast cutting.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there was the absurdity in watching an IMAX movie \u2013 the biggest damn film format around \u2013 on an obsolete video format. I know; it\u2019s a personal sense of the absurd that not everyone gets, but if you do, then you\u2019ve a higher sense of the ridiculous than the average person. Give yourself a hug.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_bk_sd_m.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9584 aligncenter\" alt=\"ToFly_Beta_bk_sd_m\" src=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_bk_sd_m.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_bk_sd_m.jpg 750w, https:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ToFly_Beta_bk_sd_m-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The movie is in stereo and showcases British-born Bernardo Segall\u2019s effective score, and it\u2019s nice to see a lesser-known composer get some due. Segall\u2019s best-known work lies in TV (<strong>Columbo<\/strong>, <strong>Nichols<\/strong>, <strong>Airwolf<\/strong>) but he also scored a handful of feature films, including <strong>The Luck of Ginger Coffey<\/strong> (1961) and single-lens Cinerama extravaganza <strong>Custer of the West<\/strong> (1967).<\/p>\n<p>Freeman was <strong>To Fly<\/strong>\u2019s co-director, and he also co-photographed the still-stunning, two-time Oscar-winning short <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9560\">Sentinels of Silence \/ Centinelas del silencio<\/a> <\/strong>(1971), which real, REALLY needs to be on Blu-ray. Director Robert Amram filmed Aztec and Mayan pyramids from a helicopter, and the colours and aerial panoramas are stunning.<\/p>\n<p>Also reviewed are a pair of the company\u2019s films released on DVD and Blu-ray \u2013 the Oscar-nominated shorts <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9563\">Dolphins! <\/a><\/strong>(2000) +\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kqek.com\/mobile\/?p=9567\">The Living Sea<\/a> <\/strong>(1995), both shot in IMAX and released by Image Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coming next:<\/em> a review of Twilight Time\u2019s Blu-ray edition of the John Wayne-Richard Attenborough-Judy Geeson cop thriller <strong>Brannigan<\/strong> (1975) plus Wayne as <strong>McQ<\/strong> (1974), and perhaps Richard Attenborough\u2019s greatest performance as repulsive serial killer John Christie in the taut, grim thriller <strong>10 Rillington Place<\/strong> (1971), which co-starred Geeson, and was released by Sony in superb Region 2 special edition while we in North America have to settle for a bare bones MOD.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also finishing up on the next podcast, which should be up by the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Cheers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark R.
