The Ravages of Colonialism: Concerning Violence + Grande Hotel

ConcerningViolence_posterJust posted is a review of Göran Olsson’s latest documentary, Concerning Violence (2014), distributed theatrically by KINO, and screening at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema Friday February 27 – Thursday March 5.

Olsson’s film sets the words of Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth with matching rare footage from former African colonies rising up against their European aggressors, and it’s a fascinating time capsule / essay film from the director of The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975.

A less visceral but no less affecting companion doc is Lotte Stoops’ Grande Hotel (2010), which similar played at Hot Docs (and needs to be on DVD), and tells its tale of colonial ills through the lives of squatters that overtook the once elegant Grande Hotel in Mozambique, after the former colony gained independence from Portugal.

Coming next: Twilight Time’s great Blu-ray edition of When the Wind Blows (1986), Jimmy Murakami’s vivid adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ anti-nuclear tale.

Cheers,
