Epics Galore: Admiral / Michiel de Ruyter (2015), Exodus (1690), and Risen (2016)
No time for a full-blown blog today – busy editing an upcoming podcast with Girl in the Photographs composer Nima Fakhrara – but I’ve posted reviews of a trio of historical epics – the superb, action-packed bio-drama Admiral / aka Michiel de Ruyer (2015) from Mongrel Media on DVD; Otto Preminger’s sprawling and still-affecting film version of Leon Uris’ novel on the founding of Israel, Exodus (1960), new on Blu with restored multi-channel sound from Twilight Time; and Kevin Reynolds’ sometimes inventive retelling of Christ’s resurrection in Risen (2016) from Sony.
Coming next: Arrow Video’s Gangster VIP set, book review of Noel Mellor’s Adventures in VHS, and two Janis Joplin docs – Amy Berg’s Janis: Little Girl Blue (MVD Visual) + Howard Alk’s still unavailable CanCon classique Janis (1974).
Cheers,
