Review:

New nurses move into a strictly managed dorm, including pretty Yuki (absurdly evanescent Jun Izumi), a nurse previously booted from the sisterhood due to bad behaviour and being a poor role model for her colleagues. Her much younger roomies are initially suspicious of her age and maturity, but fear switches to shock and pleasant surprise when she not only encourages illicit night rendezvous with hungry boyfriends, but boozing, and self-pleasuring with Hoover nozzles.

Attempting to maintain order is the dorm mother who relies on a bulldog outfitted with a flashlight for midnight patrols in search of curfew breakers and any member of the male species. This also includes Yuki’s ex-husband (a cop with the finesse of Inspector Clouseau) pretending to be an accident victim and re-win Yuki’s devotion at her workplace. Although she prefers men (and diddles a highly placed surgeon), Yuki also enjoys the tender care of her roomies, teaching them a few tricks now & then. Unbeknownst to the sisterhood, the otherwise prim & proper dorm mother actually harbors a secret basement dungeon where she ‘reminds’ wayward men of the building’s official rules & regulations.

Director Yoshihiro Kawasaki’s Nurse Dorm is a genuinely weird creature: it’s a sex farce with a perpetually happy central character; a bubbly pop jazz score and pop music montages by Itou Haruhiko (Yuki’s afternoon jog to music, around the film’s midpoint, is incredibly long); and dorm rooms filled with actual pop culture iconography, including Duran Duran posters, and a pair of Mickey Mouse pillows providing peripheral comfort during a fellatio montage.

The finale makes no sense – after a farcical free-for all where Yuki’s ex-husband uses and abuses his police powers to ‘inspect’ the dorm inhabitants and chastise the dorm mother, the entire group are ‘forced’ by the dorm matron to participate in a disciplinary jog, led by the every-gleeful Yuki – but that’s typical of Nikkatsu’s sex comedies, since their main goal is to tease & deliver the goods rather than provide a coherent story & wrap-up.

Jun Izumi, a natural at light comedy, appeared in several Nikkatsu films (including the Sadean Woman with Pierced Nipples and Angel Guts 5: Red Vertigo) before retiring from film in 1989.

Other nurse films in Nikkatsu’s canon include Nurse Diary: Wicked Finger (1980) and Story of a White Coat: Indecent Acts (1984).
