We Come As Profiteers: Hubert Sauper’s Grim African Diptych

September 2, 2015 | By

WeComeAsFriends_poster_sI reviewed Hubert Sauper’s utterly grim doc Darwin’s Nightmare (2004) back in 2007 when good old Maple Films still existed, and ported the review from the archive as a related piece to his new film, the similarly grim We Come As Friends (2014), filmed as Sudan was being split into Arabic north and Christian south nations.

The visuals in both films are outstanding, but Friends is a more concise drama with interviews rather than a full fly-on-the-wall document. Sauper’s film recently screened at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, and I figure it’ll likely come back for another round before its inevitable DVD release (likely sometime in the fall / winter season), given its powerful theme of colonial exploitation.

Cheers,
