Soundtrack Reviews: Video Game Scores

May 21, 2013 | By

Just uploaded is a quartet of video game scores from 2013 and 2012 featuring music by major feature film and TV talents.

Top-lining the quartet is Bear McCreary’s score for Defiance [M], which he’s released as a 90 minute (yes, that’s correct) digital album on his own label Sparks and Shadows. From La-La Land come Tyler Bates’ grand God of War: Ascension [M], Mark Mancina’s Sorcery [M], and Christopher Lennertz’ Starhawk [M].

The styles of each composer ensure no score sounds identical (and the subjects of each game is significantly different), but I really like Lennertz’ work the most because its more cohesive, and shows off his fine writing chops. I also love the fact game makers mandate the kind of budgets typical of Hollywood productions, and the scope of these scores is massive – especially Bates’ score.
