Citizens Bill and Jane

Just posted are reviews of two docs centered on iconic activists with unique adgendas.

The former host of the popular 1990s PBS science show is chronicled in Bill Nye: Science Guy (2017), as he accepts challenges to debate climate change deniers, and see Carl Sagan’s dream of a solar sail come to life.

David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg’s film ends its exclusive run at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema this evening.

Jane Jacobs was profiled in an exceptional doc Citizen Jane: The Battle for the City (2016), and Torontonians will get some insight into the devastation that was averted in NYC when she battled city planning tsar Robert Moses, and later helped kill the Spadina Expressway soon after moving to Toronto in the early 1970s.

Jacobs’ insight on the value within ‘urban chaos’ and the dangers of mega-projects remains timeless, and Matt Tyrnauer’s film is being screened Wed. Nov. 29 at the Revue Cinema, and is available on DVD via Ifc Independent Film.
